The 2018 NBA Draft: Background for Film and Sports Fans
The 2018 NBA Draft was held in June 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It took place a few months after the box office weekend shown above, the October 2017 frame led by Happy Death Day and Blade Runner 2049. The draft is long over, but it remains one of the more talked-about classes of recent years. It also shows how sport and entertainment coverage often overlap in a city like New York.
The first round contained 30 picks and the full draft ran to 60 selections across two rounds. The Phoenix Suns took Deandre Ayton first overall. The Sacramento Kings followed with Marvin Bagley III. The night's biggest storyline was a draft-day trade: Luka Dončić was selected third by the Atlanta Hawks and dealt to the Dallas Mavericks for Trae Young, who had gone fifth. Dončić and Young both became leading players, so the trade is still debated today. Other well-known names from the class include Jaren Jackson Jr., Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Mikal Bridges and Michael Porter Jr.
Why draft grades age so quickly
Instant grades handed out on draft night are a lot like opening-weekend reviews. They capture first impressions, not long-term results. Some players picked in the late lottery or later outperformed several selections above them, much as a modest release can build an audience long after its debut. Anyone looking back at 2018 grades should read them as a snapshot of expectations at the time, not a verdict.
